Call out:
Words of the community

05 May 2020
Semaphore editorial committee

Semaphore is seeking submission to a collective portrait of the recently removed public artwork Faces of the Community (2006) by Marco Macron and Rodney Glick.

A landmark visible from the (then) newly opened Mandurah train line and the slightly less-recently extended Kwinana Freeway; the work was a composite of over 250 photographs taken of members of the Cockburn community at a time of rapidly increasing access to digital photography, editing software and printing technologies.

It is with this manifold structure in mind that we want to hear from you, our community, to build a layered archive of this artwork via memories, reflections, facts, reviews, opinions and hearsay.

Please submit texts up to 200 words and/or up to three images to by midnight, 31 May, 2020.

Kaya. We wish to acknowledge the Whadjuk People of Boorloo boodja who are the traditional owners of the land where Semaphore is made. We respect their culture, their custodianship, and their continuing contribution to the life of this city and this region. That includes recognising and respecting sovereignty while working in solidarity towards a treaty and supporting ongoing connection to country. That means linguistic rights, economic opportunity, and artistic endeavour. To their Elders, past, present and emerging, we say thanks.
